IKOS Assists Haiti Earthquake Survivors
… The Hellenic Rescue Team has in the past saved many lives after earthquakes in Turkey, Algeria, Iran and elsewhere. After the Haiti earthquake, Elena, who was born in Thessaloniki, contacted Athanasios Sotirakis, president of the HRT, to offer full funding and logistics support for a rescue mission to Haiti and for the construction of an orphanage for the children of Haiti. Within days an all-volunteer 10-person team was organized and on its way to Haiti. Ms Ambrosiadou could not be part of this mission on such short notice but fortunately a member of her personal staff, Carmen Michalska, enthusiastically volunteered to join. Ms Michalska, who has special forces training, played a vital role in the rescue of Mr Exantus who was trapped in a space too small for the male rescue workers to access. Ms Ambrosiadou said: “IKOS is very grateful for the success of the Hellenic team but the mission does not stop here; the construction of an orphanage for the care and education of children who lost their parents in this tragedy comes next. We thank all the volunteers who participated. This is the best example of what a motivated team can achieve with direct and immediate support,” IKOS congratulates the HRT and will continue to support their efforts. Ms Ambrosiadou plans to train with the HRT and will sponsor special training courses available to volunteers in the near future. There are less than a handful of rescue teams in the world who specialize in saving the lives of earthquake victims. IKOS is now collecting donations to support the HRT and to purchase shelter boxes from ShelterBox (www.shelterbox.org), a UK based NGO. These boxes cost UK £490 each and provide accommodation for 10 people for up to six months including sleeping arrangements, a stove capable of burning multiple fuels and vital water treatment materials.
